"We deserve to govern this country"

John Hinderaker at Powerline issues a challenge to Republicans that Canadian Conservatives should pay attention to:
It's time for conservatives--mainstream Americans, in other words--to throw off the shackles and get aggressive. Our beliefs are correct, our values are the foundation of any society that doesn't have a death wish, and our interests, unlike those of the leftists, are legitimate. We deserve to govern this country, and before long, we will.

That's some scary, anti-democratic shit right there. Why bother voting, since we know who's supposed to be the permanent majority? Hell, why even bother with an opposition to begin with, since they're wrong, wrong, WRONG!?

"Scary anti-democratic shit" - what are you talking about? Did you actually read the article at the link?

Hinderaker is suggesting that conservatives be confident enough to defend their policies in the public forum, quit apologizing for what they believe in, and govern like conservatives when they ARE democratically elected. Sort of like liberals do.

Your comment is an example of exactly what the article is about -liberals don't accept that conservatives' viewpoints are legitimate or represent a consensus when they are elected, so conservatives are expected to govern like liberals if they do form a government. How is that democratic?

By the way, it isn't the Conservative Party in Canada that calls itself "Canada's natural governing party" - talk about scary, anti-democratic shit.

Wow Kelseigh! Take a pill or something. You've been so viciously brainwashed by your sacred Liberal media troops that you aren't even being rational. You should seriously get educated in REAL TIME about what this opposing party stands for. It has very little to do with what you've been told. So sad that you're so gullible and scared. You'e missing out on an amazing leader while you writhe in agony at the prospect of anyone other than who YOU BELIEVE should run this country. Sound a bit familiar??? Hypocrites!

I think this is your problem when it comes to conservatives in Canada: they're not the mainstream! Most Canadians are either moderate-left or moderate-right. The CPC covers most of the spectrum of the Right, including the extreme-right wingnuts. The Liberal party covers most of the spectrum of the left, but many of the extreme-left moonbats gravitate towards the NDP or Greens.

Of course, you have to decide on the starting point of what you consider "center" in Canadian politics. I'd argue that in Canada the center is more to the left than in the USA, but more to the right than many places in Europe. That's why a friend of mine emigrated to Canada from England: more conservative, but not as insane as the USA.

Even when I was a member of the Reform Party, I was always confused when they portrayed Conservatives as the "majority of Canadians". You'd think that if most Canadians were right-of-center, it would be easy for the CPC to win elections, especially with the leftist vote split up between three parties.
